Mélia is a creature-creative passionate about contemporary dance and its many avenues. Originally from Quebec City, now based in Montreal to develop her artistic practice, she completed a BA in contemporary dance at UQAM in April 2022. Before that, her BA in Anthropology at Université Laval sowed in her the seeds of curiosity to seek and deconstruct.

An essential step in her research process is improvisation. Everything starts from there; from what emerges in spontaneity. She is inspired by keywords that act as a basis and is interested in their etymology, their polysemy and the metamorphic effects they have on the body. She also has a strong interest in state work resulting from the fusion between bodies and plastic or textile materials.

Recently admitted to the DESS in somatic education at UQAM, Mélia wants to continue her career by using versatility to contribute in her own way to the field of living arts in Quebec.

Parenthèse

Parenthèse presents a dreamlike universe where disarticulated bodies walk through a perpetual quest for raw beauty. This metamorphic staging is at the heart of a phase of desperation for impossible elegance. It’s a parenthesis for this interstice, this in-between space, this intrinsic relationship between one parenthesis and another, this no-space, this transit, this mystery, what is unspoken, hidden or revealed.

Supported by the Studios Solidaires initiative announced by Diagramme – Gestion culturelle and PPS Danse, and supported by the Département de danse de l’UQAM, The team behing Parenthèse has been granted two residencies for 2023. This creation under development is the first major choreographic project initiated by Mélia.

Parcelle d’hiver

While the snow welcomes our footprints
And the cold coats us
We take with us a parcel of winter

Parcelle d’hiver is an outdoor performance, a meditative space, a poetic rendezvous, a winter nostalgia. This is an ephemeral proposal. The embodied research is conceived in symbiosis with the invested place and influenced by the performer’s feelings in the present moment. Surrounded by the cold, this piece is a challenge to embrace winter with softness and curiosity. Interpreted by Germain Ducros, Parcelle d’hiver is presented for the first time at the Nuit aux Flambeaux, on February 25th, 2023.
